Readers' Theater on Monday, October 4

If you haven't heard at home, we are doing our first Readers' Theater!  The kids will be performing on Monday, since I will be out on Friday.

I allow the kids to get as creative as they want to be - within the parameters of the play and their roles.  So if they are asking you if they can bring items and clothes in for props and scenery, that is okay with me, as long as it is appropriate and related to their Readers' Theater.

I will be sure to post videos of their performances right here on the blog for you to check out!

Any questions just let me know!

Third Grade is Germinating!

Ask your children and you will hear that, of course, germinating means growing or sprouting.

The school garden in the playground has begun to grow and you can see some plants sprouting out of the soil.  In addition, in Science we have concluded our unit on Plants by conducting our own science experiment about germination.

Each student had lima beans, red kidney beans and sunflower seeds and we placed them in a ziploc bag with a moist paper towel to see if they would grow.  Each student wrote their hypothesis down and then on Thursday we examined the beans to see what occurred.  I could describe the results myself, but I thought you would enjoy seeing the kids examine and discuss their findings.  Below are two videos of the students examining their beans and writing observations and their conclusions.

We are nearing the conclusion of The Magician's Nephew, and the kids have made excellent connections with this story and really led great discussions about the characters and plot.  Ask your students how this book connects to Noah's Ark, Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden!

In Social Studies, we discussed how we leave in an urban community which is different from a rural or suburban community.  However, after talking about the differences we also pointed out that all communities regardless of type have people, places to live, work and play in common.

In Math, we are starting our chapter on whole number addition and then on to whole number subtraction.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 23 at 7 p.m. beginning in the Church.  The kids have a very special surprise in store for you!

Science is Everywhere!

We had another great week here in Third Grade!

As we read on in The Magician's Nephew, the class continues to make excellent connections and predictions.  It is obvious they are absorbing the book and really thinking deeply about what they are hearing and relating to the book's theme and characters.

I was so proud of the class at The Mass of the Holy Spirit, our first All-School Liturgy.  They were so well-behaved and listened attentively to the homily and offered up thoughts and ideas to Father Mike.  Prior to the Mass we discussed our thoughts on the Holy Spirit, and we created a vast word web of various words we related to the Holy Spirit (you can see some of these terms on our dove by the office!)

The class excited about Science and plants!
Science was a main focus this week.  We are on a plant unit and on Wednesday we examined and dissected various plants in our group and diagramed the plant in our science journals.  There were beets, radishes, pansies and wheat grass to examine.  The students noticed the pollen on the pansy flower, the seeds at the base of the wheat grass and found the tunnels going through the beets and radishes once we cut them open.  It was messy but a great learning experience!

Oscar, Clive, Valerie and Caroline dissecting the pansy flower!

Mary, Lance, Delaney and Trent dissecting beets!

Maggie, Angelina, Brendan and Katie dissecting wheat grass!

Kaya, Maddie, Jane and Patrick dissecting radishes!
In Social Studies, we are discussing the makings of a community and will make our own community map next week!

I am enjoying reading the letters the students wrote to me in their Readers' Notebooks, they are writing great summaries and truly thinking about what they are reading.

On Friday, all the students had the opportunity to hold and let Lucy, our class hamster check them out. I was impressed at how gentle and caring each student was while handling our small pet. Other than being a fun, enjoyable addition to our class, it also helps teach personal responsibility and awareness since she is so small.

Have a great weekend!

Great First Full Week!

It was a great first full week back!  We have really gotten back into the groove of school.

We began our class read aloud, which is the first in the Chronicles of Narnia series, The Magician's Nephew.  The students have been enjoying the story.  They are making great predictions, discovering new vocabulary and make text-to-text, text-to-life and text-to-world connections as we read.  I am so impressed at the great discussions that generate from the students as we follow the story.

This week we reviewed summarizing and retelling what we have read.  We have also started working with our guided reading level letters and Reading Workshop will begin on Monday using our Reader's Notebook and literacy centers.

In writing, we reviewed the concepts of a complete sentence, going over the mechanics of writing (capitalization, punctuation, statements versus questions).  This has set us up to begin diving into our Writing Workshop next week using our writing binders.

Math is going very well, with review of place-value and how to read, write, compare and order numbers.  Topic 1 Test will be at the end of next week.

In Science, we discussed plants and how they grow.  We talked about the important parts of a plant and what each part does to help a plant survive.  The below pictures are from our Science Observations.  The students explored the courtyard for various plants, leaves, trees and wrote their observations down in their journal.  Next week, the students will continue to study plants and get to grow their own plants from beans and seeds.

In Social Studies, we went over some of our country's historical documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.  We also reviewed map skills and the various types of subjects all within Social Studies.  Next week, we will begin our unit about Life in Communities.

In Religion, we have a class prayer leader that leads our class in a discussions and religion reading.  We will also be attending weekly Mass every Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. if you are ever able to join us!

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!  See the kids on Tuesday!
