Science is Everywhere!

We had another great week here in Third Grade!

As we read on in The Magician's Nephew, the class continues to make excellent connections and predictions.  It is obvious they are absorbing the book and really thinking deeply about what they are hearing and relating to the book's theme and characters.

I was so proud of the class at The Mass of the Holy Spirit, our first All-School Liturgy.  They were so well-behaved and listened attentively to the homily and offered up thoughts and ideas to Father Mike.  Prior to the Mass we discussed our thoughts on the Holy Spirit, and we created a vast word web of various words we related to the Holy Spirit (you can see some of these terms on our dove by the office!)

The class excited about Science and plants!
Science was a main focus this week.  We are on a plant unit and on Wednesday we examined and dissected various plants in our group and diagramed the plant in our science journals.  There were beets, radishes, pansies and wheat grass to examine.  The students noticed the pollen on the pansy flower, the seeds at the base of the wheat grass and found the tunnels going through the beets and radishes once we cut them open.  It was messy but a great learning experience!

Oscar, Clive, Valerie and Caroline dissecting the pansy flower!

Mary, Lance, Delaney and Trent dissecting beets!

Maggie, Angelina, Brendan and Katie dissecting wheat grass!

Kaya, Maddie, Jane and Patrick dissecting radishes!
In Social Studies, we are discussing the makings of a community and will make our own community map next week!

I am enjoying reading the letters the students wrote to me in their Readers' Notebooks, they are writing great summaries and truly thinking about what they are reading.

On Friday, all the students had the opportunity to hold and let Lucy, our class hamster check them out. I was impressed at how gentle and caring each student was while handling our small pet. Other than being a fun, enjoyable addition to our class, it also helps teach personal responsibility and awareness since she is so small.

Have a great weekend!
